How Dustless Sanding Works
Standard drum sanding machines create significant airborne dust that travels throughout the house, settling in HVAC systems, on surfaces in adjacent rooms, and inside cabinets. Dustless sanding uses a sealed containment system attached directly to the sanding machine that captures dust before it becomes airborne. Air is filtered through a HEPA-grade filtration unit before being returned to the room.
The result is not truly zero dust, but the amount that escapes into the living space is approximately 99% less than traditional sanding. Surfaces in the room being refinished and in adjacent rooms stay clean enough that cleanup time after the job is a fraction of what it would otherwise be.
Why It Matters for Dubuque's Historic Homes
The Cathedral Hill, Langworthy, and bluff neighborhoods of Dubuque have a high concentration of homes built before 1940 with original horsehair plaster walls, tin ceilings, and detailed built-in millwork. Fine sanding dust infiltrates all of these surfaces. Dust that settles into plaster cracks, inside built-in bookcases, or on delicate original trim is very difficult to clean without risk of damage.
Dustless sanding is also significantly better for indoor air quality during and after the job. Homes with young children, pets, or residents with respiratory conditions should strongly prefer it. We use dustless sanding on all our jobs unless a client specifically requests otherwise.
What Dustless Sanding Cannot Do
"Dustless" describes the sanding process, not the type of floor. Whether we use dustless or traditional sanding, the result is the same: bare wood ready for stain and finish. Dustless sanding is a process upgrade, not a different type of work. Any floor that can be refinished can be refinished dustlessly.
